Nerve impingement can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. It occurs is when the joints of the spine or pelvis lock up after an abnormal movement, which then causes pinching of the cartilage (also called facet joint impingement).  The pinching puts pressure on the adjacent nerve root that causes nerve pain and pressure. Nerve impingement can cause pain to walk, sit or stand.

Disc injuries are very common and can happen over time or have a sudden onset. The disc is made up two components, the outer two thirds (annulus fibrosis) and the inner third (nucleus pulposus). When there is wear and tear on the outer component of the disc, there is the susceptibility for the inner gel component to leak out. When this happens it is an injury and the gel contents puts pressure on the nerve root, thus causing pain.

Arthritis or degenerative joint is a condition where over time the protective cartilage of a joint wears away which results in bone on bone contact of a joint. Over time this bone on bone contact wears away the healthy bone and cause degenerative change of the bone surface. Arthritis can cause joint pain and soreness, stiffness and restriction in movement, tenderness, swelling and inflammation. Later stages of arthritis can result in joint weakness, instability and deformity. Depending on the type of arthritis pain may be isolated to one joint or multiple joints from fingers, to knees, hips and spinal regions.

There are many different types of arthritis and almost as many different causes whereby it’s of relevance to focus on the two most common types; osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage has worn away the bone surface is exposed and then rub together causing degeneration and further damage. Stressed bone surfaces begin to form abnormal bone outgrowths known as bone spurs, that can cause irritation, swelling and inflammation which leads to further damage and joint restriction. As this degenerative process continues your joints become harder to move and more restrictive in range of movement.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the joint lining swells invading surrounding tissues, and producing chemical substances that attack and destroy the joint surface.  Rheumatoid arthritis is more often found in women, can sometimes being in early childhood and the joints of the hands and feet are often affected first.

Lower back pain, hip, knee and neck pain are the most common symptoms people seek chiropractic for arthritic pain relief.  Arthritis is often considered a progressive, crippling and debilitating disease process that can have a mild to severe effect on your life.  For many, simple activities of daily living such as checking your blind spot while driving, bending to put your socks on in the morning or hanging up the washing can be very difficult especially during an acute episode.

  • Ensuring joints of low back and pelvis are moving freely to assist in thebirth process. Optimal joint movement can assist in pelvic alignment and opening.
  • Educating correct posture, lifting techniques and other lifestyle factorsthat reduces spinal stress
  • Recommending exercises to assist your posture and spinal health.
